April and May: Time to Feed Trees in the Fort Worth Area
Trees are a major investment landscape investment.
If you have ‘inherited’ a mature tree on your property – congratulations! Anyone who has experienced a Fort Worth summer knows the true value of a good shade tree.
Trees Need Their Nutrients, Too
Trees are like humans: they require care and the proper nutrients to thrive and look their best. The absence of one or more nutrient in the soil will affect the growth of a tree. This will make the tree vulnerable to disease and insects, leading to a shorter lifespan.
A tree that looks haggard and malnourished is heading into dangerous territory. Malnourished trees will be more susceptible to disease and drought than a healthy tree.
North Texas Soils
North Texas has 3 different soil regions. Most of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex is in the grey colored area: the Blackland Prairie. This area is made up of dark black to light grey clays.
The dark blue area is called the Eastern Cross Timbers and has mostly sandy loam soil. In the west side of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex there is the Grand Prairie soil. This is a mix of clays, limestones, and some silty loams.
What do all of these soil types have in common?
They are mostly alkaline meaning they sit above 7 on the pH scale.
In Texas, the soil is rich in micro-nutrients to meet the needs of most trees.
Most areas of the Metroplex are urbanized. This can create stress on trees due to a generally low moisture level and soil compaction.
Call Harrod’s Arbor Tech to Get Your Soil Tested
It is a good idea to get a soil test to determine if your trees need to be fed. With the information from the soil test, Harrod’s Arbor Tech knows exactly what your trees need to flourish.
The most beneficial period to feed trees is from April to late May when the ground is workable. Trees grow better during the Spring, which is why feeding them now is important.
Tree feeding and nutrition is a balancing act. Just like humans, eating too much can affect digestion and interfere with good health. It is better and advisable to consult the professionals at Harrod’s Arbor Tech.
We have been treating and feeding trees for over two decades. We know what is needed to keep trees healthy in Texas!
