February: Time to Begin Spring Tree Care
★ Spring Tree Care Tips for the Fort Worth Area ★
With a forecast of 80 degrees in the first week of February – Spring is in the Air!
But not so fast. Here in North Texas, we could still have an ice storm (or two!) before February is over.
Winter Can Be Challenging for Landscape Trees
Late winter is the best time to begin spring tree care.
We tend to take trees for granted.
For best results, the beautiful and graceful trees in our landscapes need attention just as much as prize lawns.
Spring Tree Care Tips
Check Your Trees. Look for any sign of damage during the winter.
This includes split bark, broken branches, fungus and more.
2. Mulch your trees!
Mulch insulates the soil and provides a buffer from temperature extremes. Add mulch to a depth of 3-4 inches.
From Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Mulching: “The use of mulch is vital in Texas. A mulch layer on the soil surface allows the soil to soak up more water. It also reduces the rate of water loss from the soil. Mulches modify the soil temperature in home gardens….Winter mulch insulates the roots, crowns, and stems of winter crops from extremely low temperatures. In the summer, proper mulching helps keep the soil cooler.”
3. If winter weather has been dry, be sure to deeply water your trees.
Water is critical during leaf and shoot development.
4. If winter weather has been wet, check for standing water.
Tree fungus can be an issue in wet weather. Tree fungus will need professional treatment.
5. Fertilize trees in early spring to promote grow all year.
6. Late February is a good time for planting new trees.
7. Complete pruning of oak trees before February 15 to minimize chances of oak wilt infestation.
8. Late winter is the best time for dead tree removal.
