Common Tree Disease in North Texas – Oak Wilt

The North Texas area is one of the areas experiencing a rapid spread of Oak Wilt disease.
Without treatment early on – Oak Wilt spreads and will kill all trees in a landscape.
According to the US Forest Service: “Oak wilt is caused by the exotic fungus, Ceratocystis fagacearum. The disease kills tens to hundreds of thousands of oak trees in the Midwest and Texas every year. The fungus is carried by certain species of sap beetles. If contaminated beetles land on fresh wounds (such as those resulting from storms or tree pruning), the tree will likely become infected…Below-ground spread occurs when the fungus is carried through the water conducting system from diseased trees to healthy ones through grafted roots.”
Oak Wilt mainly affects red oaks; including northern red oak, black oak and pin oak. Red oaks often die within a few weeks after becoming infected. White oaks are more resistant and the disease progresses more slowly.
Spread of the oak wilt fungus from diseased to healthy trees occurs both above and below-ground. Oaks within approximately 100 feet of each other – depending on the size of the trees – have connected or grafted root systems. Left untreated, oak wilt will continue to move from tree to tree. It progressively kills more oaks over an increasingly larger area.

Common North Texas Tree Disease – Hypoxolyn Canker

Hypoxolyn Canker is another common tree disease. Hypoxylon canker is a fungus and an opportunistic pathogen. This means it will not affect healthy and vigorous trees. However, Hypoxylon can quickly colonize weakened or stressed trees.
Hail and storm damage can create wounds on branches that allow entry to the hypoxylon fungus.
Hypoxolyn Canker creates problems on trees that are stressed. Many factors in urban environments can stress trees. Stress factors can set in motion a chain of events leading to tree decline and death.
- Construction can wound roots and cause stress in trees.
- Constructing swimming pools, sidewalks, patios, and driveways can damage essential roots and root flares that provide necessary water and minerals for a healthy tree.
- Soil compaction and addition of fill soil causes drainage issues and suffocates roots.
- Prolonged drought conditions and high temperatures place significant stress on trees.

Signs of Tree Disease
With the proper diagnosis and treatment most trees can be saved – if the disease is spotted and treated in time.
Some of the signs of tree disease include discolored leaves, defoliation, dead limbs or branches, thinning canopy, small leaves and reduced twig growth, bark falling off and dark brown or black patches.
It is very important to contact us at the first signs of any tree health issues.
We will diagnose any tree problems, create a treatment plan and begin treatment.
Trees infected with oak wilt will need removal. Care must be taken to protect the remaining trees from infection during the tree removal. Contact Harrod’s Arbor Tech tree care specialists for expert tree diagnosis, treatment or tree removal.
Disease Control for Trees

Tree health maintenance is important. Just like lawns and gardens – trees also need regular care.
Fertilizing is an important part of keeping your tree healthy on a regular basis. Adding fertilizer to your tree’s maintenance schedule will improve its ability to successfully fight off fungal attacks. And it will improve overall tree health; especially during stressful months in winter and summer.
Insect control is also very important. At the first sign of insects – call us.
